The lake was created by the construction of Carters Dam on the Little River. The dam and reservoir are named for Jesse Carter, a Georgia farmer who donated the land for the project.
The lake is home to numerous fish species, including largemouth bass, catfish, crappie, and bluegill. Several hiking trails wind their way around the lake's perimeter, providing opportunities for picnicking and birdwatching. Carters Lake is also popular for fishing; anglers can try largemouth bass, striped bass, white bass, catfish, and crappie.
